Twice this week I have seen people accidentally mess up typing “/nickserv identify pass”, or whatever version they prefer, each time they accidentally displayed their password to all; this leaves the person vulnerable to anyone who saw, as the person could easily type “/nickserv ghost nick pass” and bam! Person disconnected from the server.

So, here I’m going to explain what you can do with NickServ, including dropping the nick you have registered, re-registering it, and a few other things.

Identifying.

/nickserv identify passwordhere
/ns identify passwordhere
/identify password here

GhostKill.

/nickserv ghost nickhere passwordhere
/ns ghost nickhere passwordhere

Nick dropping.

/nickserv drop pass
/ns drop pass

Re-registering.

/nickserv register password emailaddress
/ns register password emailaddress

Now, HydraIRC (Oh here I go, HydraIRC this, HydraIRC that).

If you want to prevent messing up your identifying you can simply create a command profile or two.

Call your profile something like ‘join’ and inside it type:

/nickserv identify password

/j #room1

/j #room2

/j #room3

And for changing your nick back and re-identifying create one called ‘nick’, and inside type:

/nickserv identify password

/nick YourNick

/away

(/Away clears any away messages you may have set.)

And also, something else you can do with NickServ, open a query with nickserv by typing ‘/query nickserv’ then inside this window you can type all your nickserv commands, this way you’re not typing your commands into the main window risking accidentally typing ‘?nickserv identify password’. In this window you can also type ‘info nickhere’ this brings up information including:

The status of the nick; registerd, unregistered.
When it was registered.
When it was last online.
And info about whom it has sent memoserv messages to.

HydraIRC setup.

HydraIRC, like I said before, this is my preferred client of choice.

It’s slightly more pleasant to the eye compared to mIRC in my opinion, I haven’t a clue about mIRC’s scripting so I don’t need it, so, I use hydra.

Currently I’m using v0.3.138, it is the most stable beta so far, that’s why it was approved for the website so it can be downloaded by the masses rather than just me, and others like me who idle, and occasionally help in #hydrairc on EFnet.

OK, I’m guessing you’ve downloaded the installer; you’re not simple so you’re perfectly capable of installing it for yourself.

Now, when you’re all done installing it open it up, you’ll be presented with a pop up saying: “You currently have no identities, would you like to create one now?”

Click “yes” and carry on.

I’m going to explain this using myself as the example for nick’s and so on.

Next, you will be presented with the preference’s screen, click “New”.

Under identity, type something like: Jim, default, or identity 1. It’s completely up to you.

Real name: You could put your real name if you wanted, you could put a little note.

I like to put “Well done, you successfully /whois’d me.”

Username: Just put the nick you decided on, for me it’ll be “Jim”

Nick: This is the IRC nick you’re going to use; currently with the server change I’m using “Jimmothy” this is also where HydraIRC out does mIRC on a feature, in mIRC you have Nick and Alternate Nick, that is only two choices, if they’re both taken for some reason you have to manually decide on a nick. So, with Hyrda you can happily add your nick and as many variations you can think of.

These all work, try them for yourself.

Identd username: I just put my nick or a different older nick, it shows up when someone /whois’ you so it can be helpful to others if you’re having fun playing along with your nick changes (You know it’s gonna happen eventually)

Identd OS: I’m on XP so I type just that, you can leave this blank if you want.

While we’re still on the settings page we might as well set a few other things.

Go to the ‘misc’ option, you don’t need to touch half of these, it’s more a choice thing.

Identd OS: leave it.
Identd username: Set it to whatever you set it earlier.
Time stamp: Leave it.
Window time stamp. As default it’ll currently show as “[20:00]” I personally like having the seconds showing so change it from ‘[%H:%M]’ to ‘[%H:%M%S]’
Default identity: Leave it.
Jump to Nick completion suffix: I like to leave it with, but others like : , - , _ ,| , and ~, it’s completely up to you.
Booleans, jump all the way down here and have a play, you don’t need to change much, and also, if you don’t feel comfortable just leave it.
I have ‘minimise to systray’, ‘logging’, and ‘audio mute’ all set to true.
Fonts: This is completely up to you as always, but I personally like to change the font size from 9 to 8, it just looks neater in my opinion.

Ok, now move on to “Command Profiles”, this is where all the auto joins’s, nick changes, ghost kills, and other useful commands can be made easier.

First, where it says ‘<<>>’ type OnStartup, type it exactly like that, it’s case sensitive. Inside type /server irc.serverhere.com, I need kechara.sorcery.net so I’d type /server kechara.sorcery.net, if you want to join any other servers from start up on the next line type /newserver irc.serverhere.com.

For your next command profile type irc.servernameher.com_OnLoggedIn, same as last time, case sensitive, in need kechara.sorcery.net_OnLoggedIn.

Inside I would type:

/nick Jimmothy

/identify passwordhere

/j #w1khyjinx

/j #worth1000

Other command profiles you may want to add are, nick, afk, ghost, quit, part, etc

Create a profile called nick, inside type:

/nick nickhere

/identify passwordhere

Ghost.

Inside type

/msg nickserv ghost nick passwordhere

/nick yournick

AFK

Inside type

/nick yournick|afk (otherthings you may prefer include: yournick`afk, yournick|away, yournickAFK, etc)

Quit.

Inside type

/quit This is an example of a quit message.

To use any of these you simply type /exec nick, /exec afk. If you typed afk as, AFK, aFk, aFK, it doesn’t matter, to use them in the window you could type it in caps and it wouldn’t be a problem, it’s only the auto joins that need to be case sensitive.

Next you will need to set up some highlights, unlike mIRC each highlight has to be added separately, yeah, it’s a faff but worth it. Go to Notifications, you should be under All Networks/Default, click add and away you go. For me I have the following set:

Hightlight: ‘Jimmothy’ Flash taskbar, check. BG colour to make it stand out.
Hightlight: ‘Jimmothy,’ same as above.
Hightlight: ‘Jimmothy-’ same as above.
Highlight: ‘Jimmothy:’ same as above.
Hightlight: ‘Jim’ same as above

Etc…

Buddy groups.

If you’re me you’ve met a series of people on IRC you consider friends, or you just want to be in a user list of your own, damn anti social folk.

Type the name of the group you want to create ‘friends’, ‘<3’,>

Also with your buddy list you can switch back over to highlights, and change the drop down to say the name of your new buddy list instead of ‘All Network/Defaults’ now you can add highlights with the peoples nick and a simple bit or extra text and you can have your friends talking in separate colours, I love this feature, it makes life easier, good way to separate your friends from the peasants.

To set this up simply go over to highlights, add the following, you’ll need a new highlight per nick:

Highlight: (.)*nickhere(.)* set the FG colour to a colour of your choice and check ‘highlight whole line’

OK, now you’re done in preferences, sorry if that took a while, there isn’t much left to do and you’ll be ready to own IRC on a regular basis.

Click OK and it’ll bring up the welcome screen, like it says, press ctrl+S.

Here I’ll show you how to add a server, you may need this in future, and since kechara isn’t in by default I’ll use it as an example.

It’s obvious but click ‘Add Network’ enter Sorcery.NET and click OK, now click ‘Add Server’

Description: Kechara
Address/Port kechara.sorcery.net
Network: Sorcery.NET

Simple enough. Also add cookie just in case.

Description: Cookie
Address/Port cookie.sorcery.net
Network: Sorcery.NET

And now I’m pretty sure that is all you need to know, for some reason I feel like listing a few simple IRC commands, so I will.

Instructions for the new server.

K, #w1khyjinx and other worth rooms had a server change.

There was the fact that idigital-web was unstable, also we were losing vital people in chat, and you can’t have an online community and not have IRC available to everyone, that wouldn’t be fair. So, we moved :)

I’m going to write up a quick set of instructions for joining the server, and also add IRC links that are clickable from your browser. I’m also presuming you are using mIRC or HydraIRC, if you were a Java app user I’ll have to look into that.

mIRC.

Although I use HydraIRC, mIRC is the more common choice of IRC clients. I know this, and most of you know this, so I’ll cover mIRC first.

Click the icon (duh)
You will be presented with the connect screen, here you just need to click the pretty flower (this one’s for you n00bile clicker of things) this’ll bring you the server selection list. You want “Sorcerynet: US, CA, Palo Alto”. Now, click Ok, and the server will connect.
Now, you just need to type “/j #w1khyjinx” for you’re general chat needs and “/j worth1000” if you’re having a problem. All the rooms on the old server are still here
You may still have the rooms in your channel list, if so set them to all servers and check “join on connect”

That’s it for mIRC. :) hope this helps, and if something is wrong please comment and say so.

HydraIRC.

Now, my client of choice, first I’m gonna link you to the wiki for it, I can try and explain but the wiki is very well written. If you can’t pull off the auto-joins you’re either lazy or slightly dim, now I warn you, I’m not the brightest button and I can do it.

You want to be in the command profiles area, so, Options > Prefs > Command profiles.
Here you want to go to one already there labled OnStartup. Here type “/server cookie.sorcery.net”.
Now create a new profile. Just fill in the box with “cookie.sorcery.net_OnLoggedIn” and click add, now, that’s the new profile created.
Inside that profile type “/j #w1khyjinx” if you want to join #worth1000 or any other room add those too. Also add things like “/msg nickserv identify yourpass” saves you identifying with the server.
Now you’re all done, now when you open HydraIRC it should connect to the server, once there it’ll connect to the room :)

If this is slightly wrong read the wiki, also comment and say so, that way I can change it for other people.

Trillian.

Hah! I don’t have a clue about Trillian, I have used it and I hated it. If you’re using Trillian you should consider switching clients. Also, go have a wash, you know why, you dirty Trillian user, you.

Ok, they were the manual ways, now I’ll give you the really lazy IRC links, they’re just like your normal web links except they lead you to IRC servers and rooms.

You can bookmark these in IE or Mozilla FireFox (yeah, firefox. Go get that smelly IE user)

Emergency Procedures.

If by some freak accident should idigital-web go down and you can no longer access #w1khyjinx you should follow the following procedures:

1. Try to connect to the IP address: "/server 69.28.250.129" If this doesn’t work the server is truly down.

2. Connect to the Something Awful server: "#w1khyjinx like normal "/j #w1khyjinx" If you're the first person in you'll be given OP status and it'll be your job to voice other users and give Op's to the usual Op's including: Cyn, Hbomb, Dollyllama, MisterIQ, Axiom, Jaymeekae, MPolgara, Jayce, Deadartist, Sliquid, Scarlette, Shive-TPF-, JinxRLM, Meowza Moges and others

3. If all this fails slowly leave your seat, lay down on the floor, clear some space and then curl into the foetal position. Maybe grab a pillow for comfortability, feel free to cry at this point, we understand your pain.

HydraIRC, my IRC client of choice. Why aren’t you using it yet? Do you have a good excuse?

Ok, writing stuff like this is pretty fun. Now you’re thinking “Sad fuck, go get a job, stop being a waster.” Well, you’re totally right but, shut the fuck up, dickhead.

Anyway, w1khyjinx etiquette, yep, rules about what is considered polite.
I’ve been nominated to write this since I spend way too much time in hyjinx, and I needed something to do, thank you Catj for the idea. :)

Things that are expected of you out of politeness:
Say hi, someone just entered, is it so hard to say “hi” or “hey” or something along those lines? No, so say hi.

Say bye, this drives me mad, people who just quit, unless you’re in a rush you have enough time to say goodbye or goodnight, maybe not those exact words but it isn’t so hard.

Be respectful, simple enough, don’t go getting riled up by what someone says, keep your calm we don’t want to be seeing “[user] fuck you! [Other user name here]” you wouldn’t tell your mum to fuck off so don’t tell anyone else to.

Swearing or cussing in general, there isn’t really any need, if your going to do it star it out I’m happier seeing f*** rather than fuck in a family orientated room.

Pagers, Ops, and other users usually have pager lists, this means if you type their name or nick they get a beep noise or a flashing taskbar or both, sometimes people are busy so think about it, put a . in their name or nick. Ops especially.

Lurkers, you drive me mad too, I can think of plenty of times I have just sat and said nothing for an hour or two but there’s no point in joining the channel if you’re just gonna sit and idle every minute of it.

The applet, stop playing with all those stupid drop down /me commands, I’m not the only one who hates those things.

Colours, I personally have my IRC clients background set to black, colours do not look nice, they’re an eyesore, doesn’t matter if your backdrops black, white, maroon, or sky blue pink with yellow dots on, colours are an eyesore, save them for another channel.

Scripts, Scripts usually contain colours which I just went over, scripts aren’t so bad, it’s the ones that do automated things, unless you’re an op with the auto-kick scripts don’t bother with one that affects the channel, especially the “*User is now listening to [crap – crappier @ 192kbps]” ones, we don’t care so don’t

Stuff to get you a kick or ban:
The Goatse Link, I can’t blame anyone for wanting you kicked for this, it’s disgusting and vile, if you want to view the inside of a mans ass do so, but don’t link it in the channel window, sicko.

Say if something isn’t safe for work, simple enough, if you wouldn’t want your boss or children to see it label it with NSFW, example: “[User] NSFW http://www.pr0nlinky.com/ NSFW.

Ok, I went to bed only to remember the annoying n00b from this morning, I can’t remember who it was but they were constantly clicking the “*Fuckwit_n00b gave you the finger” /me command from the IRC applet.

I give you this, a guide to mIRC with added links to click. At first I thought of putting this in the general stupidity forum, so, I’ll write it as if that’s where it was heading.

This morning shortly after entering #w1khyjinx I noticed there was plenty of new folk I hadn’t met before. n00bs don’t really stand out in chat since when I first enter I say my obligreets then I browse the contests, forum, and many other websites and blogs.

So, to you, annoying newb who kept clicking that bloody “*newb gave you the finger” command from the applet, I give you a few simple steps on how to get yourself mIRC, a real IRC client.

After the amount of times you clicked that annoying command I realised that you like to click things, so, this is a link to mIRC’s website where you can niftily click your way through more links to reach the download page, where you will decide where you want to download the installer from.

You should choose whichever location is closest to your current one.

After you have made your simple decision you can then click the link with the right mouse button, yep, the right one, you’ve been waiting to use that one for awhile haven’t you? So, right click over the link of the location you chose and mouse over to “save link to disk” or “save as...” click and select a destination for your new IRC client on your hard drive.

Now, here’s the fun bit, installing! Woo! You’ll love this you active clicker of things, you.

Ok, honestly, I don’t trust you so here’s yet another link http://www.newircusers.com/ this simple website will help you through the simple process of setting up mIRC, yeah, there’s plenty of clicking involved, nothing to get too excited about.

So, now you should have a nicely configured version of mIRC v6.16, you’ll be needing the server IP address in advanced, it’s much easier using it to begin with rather than typing “/server 69.28.250.129” later on, so copy that server IP address down and switch it for the irc.idigital-web.com one.

And that’s the end, so, now you, annoying newb can go on to become “annoying not so new” newb.
